NORWOOD, MA (Dec. 28, 2011) –  The Boston Breakers bolstered their roster by agreeing to terms with U.S. Women’s National Team star midfielder Heather O’Reilly. A three-year WPS veteran with the Sky Blue FC, O’Reilly adds tremendous experience to the Breakers midfield, which already features some of the best players in the world.

"This will be our biggest offseason signing to-date and a statement to our commitment to bring a WPS Championship to Boston," Associate General Manager Lee Billiard said.

The 26-year-old two-time WPS all-star from East Brunswick, N.J., has four goals and nine assists in her WPS career. She has started 49 of the 50 games she has played in. Last season with Sky Blue FC, O’Reilly netted one goal and an assist in 11 games. In 2010, O’Reilly scored one goal to go along with five assists. In 2009, a year in which she scored two goals and five assists, O’Reilly served as the team’s co-captain. She scored the game-winning goal against the Los Angeles Sol in the first-ever WPS Championship.

"We are very excited about adding Heather O'Reilly to the Breakers team. She's a world class player, has an incredible engine, and just is an all around winner," Boston Breakers Head Coach Lisa Cole said. "Her experience and work ethic will immediately improve our team. Look forward to her being apart of many goals and wins this season."

With the U.S. Women’s National Team in 2011, O’Reilly scored three goals and three assists in 17 games (17 starts), logging 1,328 minutes. A two-time Olympic gold medalist (2004, 2008) and veteran of two World Cups (2007, 2011), O’Reilly has 151 caps with the U.S. and 30 career goals. She ranks fourth in appearances among active players on the U.S. roster. In the 2011 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Germany, O’Reilly started five games and had one goal (it came in a 3-0 win over Colombia) and one assist. Her strike against Colombia garnered O’Reilly a nomination for the prestigious FIFA Puskas Award for the best goal of the year.  She was the first-ever U.S. player (male or female) and second-ever female nominated for the award. She was in a group that also included two of the best players in men’s soccer - Lionel Messi and Wayne Rooney.
