General Counsel
Women’s Professional Soccer (“WPS”) is the premiere women’s professional soccer league in the world today. Comprised of teams in major markets across the United States, and the top women players from around the world, WPS launched its inaugural season in Spring 2009. We are looking for an experienced attorney with exceptional legal skills and strong leadership and management skills to head the WPS legal team at the league office in San Francisco. The ideal General Counsel will be able to provide counsel on a broad range of critical legal matters in a fast-paced start-up environment. The General Counsel will direct all legal services for the league, and report directly to the Commissioner.
Functional Description
Provide strategic legal advice and support, including preparation of agreements and other documents, to the Commissioner, the Board of Governors, and league executives, including in the following wide range of areas:
- Corporate matters and governance issues, including amendment of governing documents and management of Board meeting and resolution processes;
- Player issues, including player contracts, player transfer rules, and player discipline;
- Expansion and investment matters, including league and team ownership qualification and admission;
- Business practices compliance, including competition/anti-trust considerations and registrations/filings;
- Negotiation and drafting of principal league agreements;
- Intellectual property enforcement, including policing infringements of League trademarks and copyrighted material or broadcasts;
- Employment practices and human resources policies;
- Dispute resolution and litigation avoidance/management;
- CFO support, including providing corporate and legal information and advice for tax, payroll, and budgetary purposes;
- Supervision of all attorneys working for the league including any Associate Counsel, independent contractors, law clerks, and outside counsel.
Qualifications/Skills:
- Full-time attorney, California bar membership preferred;
- 12 or more years of practice (highly qualified candidates with less years of experience may be considered);
- Professional sports industry experience;
- Experience with a leading law firm preferred;
- Strong oral presentation skills and ability to communicate effectively with owners, governors, partners, and senior executives;
- Excellent judgment;
- Business-focused, results-oriented approach utilizing strategic business judgment and the ability to work closely with a diverse group of individuals and organizations, including U.S. and global sports governance organizations and business sponsors and partners;
- Significant experience negotiating and drafting commercial agreements;
- Proactive, flexible, resourceful, and the ability to manage demanding deadlines.

New Media Intern
Women’s Professional Soccer (“WPS") is the premiere women’s professional soccer league in the world today. Comprised of teams in major markets across the United States, and the top women players throughout the world, WPS launched its inaugural season in Spring 2009. This position is based at the League office in San Francisco.
Reporting to the Web Coordinator, the New Media intern will work to achieve the league’s online and social media goals. The focus of this internship is to publish content to www.womensprosoccer.com and to manage the league’s day-to-day social media activities and interactions with fans.
Responsibilities
- Publish and update content on womensprosoccer.com including articles, blogs, events, polls and videos
- Monitor article and blog comments, message board posts and user submitted photos and videos on the League's official Social Network - the Fan Corner, fancorner.womensprosoccer.com.
- Manage and monitor WPS activities on a number of social media platforms including Facebook, YouTube, mySpace, Flickr, Ning, del.icio.us, Digg, Twitter, etc.
- Edit and upload photos
- Respond to general fan email inquiries
Qualifications
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Knowledge of HTML; Experience with an HTML editor preferred
- Experience with photo editing software (i.e. Adobe Photoshop) preferred
- Web savvy; Must possess experience with social media platforms

Journalism Intern
Women’s Professional Soccer (“WPS") is the premiere women’s professional soccer league in the world today. This position is based at the League office in San Francisco.
Reporting to the Director of Communications and Head of New Media, the Journalism intern will produce written content for the League’s website, womensprosoccer.com, and also support the League's PR initiatives.
Responsibilities
- Write player, team and off the field features for womensprosoccer.com
- Interview players and coaches
- Write league press releases and notes
- Edit league press releases, media guides and kits and freelancers’ and bloggers’ submissions
- Write entries for the League’s official blog
- Assist with special projects as needed including publications and events
Qualifications
- Background in journalism, PR, marketing, communications, sports administration or related field preferred
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Strong computer skills including MS Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, Internet Explorer
- Ability to manage multiple projects

PR & Communications Intern
The PR & Communications Intern would have the chance to learn about league and team PR & Communications issues and strategies working directly for the WPS Communications Director. The internship is hands on with frequent opportunity to create PR materials and gain experience writing for the public and media. The position also includes some administrative duties.
Internship would go four months from October 27-February 28 with the possibility of extending when the 2010 WPS Season begins. It would report directly to the Communications Director with support to the New Media team, as needed. Hours can be flexible but ideal is about 15 hours per week commitment over 3 days. Must be for college credit as this is an unpaid Internship.
Responsibilities
- Assist in tracking daily clips of WPS and related news
- Help prepare and maintain clip books
- Write stories for internal and external outlets
- Draft press releases and other communications-related documents
- Coordinate production of various media materials: bios, media guides, combine notebook, 2010 WPS draft guide
- PR administrative tasks such as mailers to media, scanning of documents and video library maintenance
- Assist in media pitching
Qualifications
- Previous experience in sports or online writing
- General knowledge of writing and drafting materials for press
- Previous time in an office environment
- Passion for sports/soccer and start-up environment
- Interest and knowledge of women’s soccer is a huge plus
- Design experience and ability to use design programs also a benefit

Video / Photo Editing Intern

Reporting to the Web Coordinator, the Video / Photo Editing Intern will work to achieve the league’s multimedia content goals. The focus of this internship is to publish video and photos to
www.womensprosoccer.com and to help manage and upload content on all the league's online outlets.
Responsibilities - Create and edit highlight videos as soon as possible following WPS games.
- Resize, edit and post photographs from team and league photographers to womensprosoccer.com immediately after games.
- Willingness to work evenings/weekends
- Post photos and videos to all social networks.
- Maintain and monitor WPS YouTube page, including fan comments.
- The ideal candidate will offer unique programming ideas for YouTube, and will possess the ability to execute on those plans.
Qualifications
- Working knowledge of Video Editing Applications (ie. Final Cut Pro, Premiere, imovie)
- Experience with photo editing software (i.e. Photoshop)
- Basic understanding of soccer

Game Day Online Coverage Intern - League Office (Spring / Summer 2010)
Women’s Professional Soccer (“WPS") is the premiere women’s professional soccer league in the world today. Comprised of teams in major markets across the United States, and the top women players throughout the world, WPS launched its inaugural season in Spring 2009. This position is based at the League office in San Francisco.
Reporting to the WPS Web Coordinator and Head of New Media, the Game Day Intern will provide online coverage for all WPS games throughout the 2010 season.
Responsibilities - Monitor Match Tracker in-game and report any technical difficulties or inconsistencies.
- Help test and monitor league webcasts.
- Post teaser article to womensprosoccer.com, and keep league site up-to-date during games.
- Post social media updates (Twitter, Facebook) throughout each WPS game.
- Immediately following the game, send boxscore to team and league PR representatives.
- Edit and add post-game match report to league website.
- Assist with special game-day projects as needed.
Qualifications - Experience working with online Content Management Systems

Reporting to COO and Development/Relationships Manager, the Operations intern will work to achieve the league’s Operational goals.
Responsibilities
Reporting to COO and Development/Relationships Manager, the Operations intern will work to achieve the league’s Operational goals.
- Assist with the planning of League events, including the Combine, Draft, All-Star Game, Championship Game, etc.
- Record and distribute player discipline reports & notices
- Gather and record game day reports from team operations directors
- Assist with determining stadium operational readiness
- Assist with monitoring overall compliance to League game day standards
Qualifications
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Experienced with Microsoft Excel
- Prior event planning experience a plus
- Knowledge of sports operations a plus
- Self-motivated; Driven team player
Marketing / Grassroots Development Intern
Reporting to the Marketing Manager and Development/Relationships Manager, the Marketing/ Grassroots intern will work to achieve the league’s marketing and grassroots goals.
Responsibilities
- Assist with the planning of League events, including the Combine, Draft, All-Star Game, Championship Game, etc.
- Work to maintain the League’s grassroots events calendar
- Maintain relationships with grassroots partners and facilitate communication with teams
- Oversee the fulfillment of partnership assets
- Assist with the planning of the League’s Camps Program
- Assist with sponsorship fulfillment
Qualifications
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills

- Prior Experience with youth soccer clubs - experience with youth soccer camps a major plus
