New Media Intern
Women’s Professional Soccer (“WPS") is the premiere women’s professional soccer league in the world today. Comprised of teams in major markets across the United States, and the top women players throughout the world, WPS launched its inaugural season in Spring 2009. This position is based at the League office in San Francisco.
Reporting to the Web Coordinator, the New Media intern will work to achieve the league’s online and social media goals. The focus of this internship is to publish content to www.womensprosoccer.com and to manage the league’s day-to-day social media activities and interactions with fans.
Responsibilities
- Publish and update content on womensprosoccer.com including articles, blogs, events, polls and videos
- Monitor article and blog comments, message board posts and user submitted photos and videos on the League's official Social Network - the Fan Corner, fancorner.womensprosoccer.com.
- Manage and monitor WPS activities on a number of social media platforms including Facebook, YouTube, mySpace, Flickr, Ning, del.icio.us, Digg, Twitter, etc.
- Edit and upload photos
- Respond to general fan email inquiries
Qualifications
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Knowledge of HTML; Experience with an HTML editor preferred
- Experience with photo editing software (i.e. Adobe Photoshop) preferred
- Web savvy; Must possess experience with social media platforms
- Knowledge of soccer a plus
- Self-motivated; Driven team player

Journalism Intern
Women’s Professional Soccer (“WPS") is the premiere women’s professional soccer league in the world today. Reporting to the Director of Communications and Head of New Media, the Journalism intern will produce written content for the League’s website, womensprosoccer.com, and also support the League's PR initiatives.
Responsibilities
- Write player, team and off the field features for womensprosoccer.com
- Interview players and coaches
- Write league press releases and notes
- Edit league press releases, media guides and kits and freelancers’ and bloggers’ submissions
- Write entries for the League’s official blog
- Assist with special projects as needed including publications and events
Qualifications
- Background in journalism, PR, marketing, communications, sports administration or related field preferred
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Strong computer skills including MS Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, Internet Explorer
- Ability to manage multiple projects

2010 Seaon Editorial Intern (Atlanta, Bay Area, Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, New Jersey, Philadelphia, St. Louis & Washington)
Overview
Are you a future sports writer, new media journalist or sports publicist? The WPS Editorial Writing Internship will help you down that path as you have the chance to contribute to the WPS league website and affiliated external websites under the auspices of the Communications Director and other affiliated editors, allowing you to gain valuable hands-on writing experience for any potential career in sports writing, journalism, new media or public relations. The internship would provide credentials and access to all teams as any professional media outlets receives, and is done remotely, from your home in any of the nine WPS cities: Atlanta, Bay Area, Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, New Jersey, Philadelphia, St. Louis & Washington.
Requirements
Internship would go from April-August 2009 with attendance expected at home WPS games (10-12 games) as well as occasional attendance at practice. It would report directly to the WPS Communications Director on content issues with support to the WPS New Media team, as well. Hours are completely flexible. Must be for college credit as this is an unpaid Internship. Interns who are active throughout the season will have the opportunity to have travel, hotel and expenses covered by the league for away games during the WPS Playoffs.
Tasks
- Cover local WPS team like a newspaper, sports beat writer
- Follow roster moves, team injuries, line-up changes during the season
- Attend home games and occasional practices as needed as a journalist to gain insights into the team, coach and its players and report news stories
- Write at least one story on game day (opinion column or sidebar) and several other stories during the course of the season on the team based on factual and proper reporting.
Experience
- Passion for women’s soccer is a must
- General knowledge of reporting skills and professionalism around athletes
- Previous writing experience (high school/college paper, online blogging, etc) is helpful but not a must as this position will help further develop those reporting and writing skills
- Journalistic integrity: desire to get the story right, proper quotations, spelling, fact checking and seeing multiple sides of an issue

Video / Photo Editing Intern

Reporting to the Web Coordinator, the Video / Photo Editing Intern will work to achieve the league’s multimedia content goals. The focus of this internship is to publish video and photos to
www.womensprosoccer.com and to help manage and upload content on all the league's online outlets.
Responsibilities - Create and edit highlight videos as soon as possible following WPS games.
- Resize, edit and post photographs from team and league photographers to womensprosoccer.com immediately after games.
- Willingness to work evenings/weekends
- Post photos and videos to all social networks.
- Maintain and monitor WPS YouTube page, including fan comments.
- The ideal candidate will offer unique programming ideas for YouTube, and will possess the ability to execute on those plans.
Qualifications
- Working knowledge of Video Editing Applications (ie. Final Cut Pro, Premiere, imovie)
- Experience with photo editing software (i.e. Photoshop)
- Basic understanding of soccer

Game Day Online Coverage Intern - League Office (Spring / Summer 2010)

Comprised of teams in major markets across the United States, and the top women players throughout the world, WPS launched its inaugural season in Spring 2009. This position is based at the League office in San Francisco.
Reporting to the WPS Web Coordinator and Head of New Media, the Game Day Intern will provide online coverage for all WPS games throughout the 2010 season.
Responsibilities - Monitor Match Tracker in-game and report any technical difficulties or inconsistencies.
- Help test and monitor league webcasts.
- Post teaser article to womensprosoccer.com, and keep league site up-to-date during games.
- Post social media updates (Twitter, Facebook) throughout each WPS game.
- Immediately following the game, send boxscore to team and league PR representatives.
- Edit and add post-game match report to league website.
- Assist with special game-day projects as needed.
Qualifications - Experience working with online Content Management Systems

Reporting to COO and Development/Relationships Manager, the Operations intern will work to achieve the league’s Operational goals.
Responsibilities
Reporting to COO and Development/Relationships Manager, the Operations intern will work to achieve the league’s Operational goals.
- Assist with the planning of League events, including the Combine, Draft, All-Star Game, Championship Game, etc.
- Record and distribute player discipline reports & notices
- Gather and record game day reports from team operations directors
- Assist with determining stadium operational readiness
- Assist with monitoring overall compliance to League game day standards
Qualifications
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Experienced with Microsoft Excel
- Prior event planning experience a plus
- Knowledge of sports operations a plus
- Self-motivated; Driven team player
Marketing / Grassroots Development Intern
Reporting to the Marketing Manager and Development/Relationships Manager, the Marketing/ Grassroots intern will work to achieve the league’s marketing and grassroots goals.
Responsibilities
- Assist with the planning of League events, including the Combine, Draft, All-Star Game, Championship Game, etc.
- Work to maintain the League’s grassroots events calendar
- Maintain relationships with grassroots partners and facilitate communication with teams
- Oversee the fulfillment of partnership assets
- Assist with the planning of the League’s Camps Program
- Assist with sponsorship fulfillment
Qualifications
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Prior event planning experience a plus
- Prior Experience with youth soccer clubs - experience with youth soccer camps a major plus
