WPS's first season of play kicked off on March 29, 2009 with seven teams and the league is looking for interested investors for its 2010 season and beyond.  Currently, the league expects to have ten teams play in the 2010 season.

The seven WPS teams playing in 2009 are based in the Bay Area, Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, New Jersey/New York, St. Louis, and Washington, D.C.  This gives the League a national footprint of three East Coast, two Midwest and two West Coast franchises.   The league will expand in 2010 with the inclusion of Atlanta and Philadelphia.
