The Los Angeles Sol celebrate clinching the 2009 WPS Regular Season title.

SANTA CLARA, Calif. (July 23, 2009) – With one of the most dominant regular season performances for any professional sports team, no less a first-year team in a new league, the Los Angeles Sol captured the WPS Regular Season title on Thursday evening with a 0-0 draw against FC Gold Pride at Buck Shaw Stadium in Santa Clara, Calif.

Under the WPS Playoff format as regular season champions, Los Angeles has earned the right to host the WPS Championship on August 22 at The Home Depot Center against the winner of the WPS Super Semifinal, which will feature the regular season runner-up hosting the winner of the WPS First Round playoff game. The WPS Championship will kick-off at 4 p.m. ET/1 p.m. PT on Saturday, August 22 with television coverage produced by Fox Soccer Channel and carried live on Fox Sports Net and select regional outlets to approximately 70 million homes nationwide. The telecast will begin with a live 30-minute pregame show at 3:30 p.m. ET/12:30 p.m. PT (check local listings).

The Sol’s regular season crown comes with three weeks still left in the season with the other six teams still fighting for the final three WPS Playoff spots. The tie moves the Sol to 11-2-5 in the WPS Standings on 38 points with their next-closest rivals, Saint Louis Athletica, at 8-6-2 with 26 points and four games to play. The Sol hold the tiebreaker against Saint Louis. The Athletica were the only team still with a mathematical chance of catching the Sol entering today’s game.

Individual tickets for the inaugural WPS Championship will go on-sale to the general public on Wednesday, July 29th at the Home Depot Center Box Office Ticketmaster.com and all Ticketmaster phone and retail outlets. Individual ticket prices will freeze at regular season rates starting at only $20, until August 1st.
