Sky Blue FC will be looking to spark some offense against the Boston Breakers on Saturday, July 4th at Yurcak Field in Piscataway, NJ.
SAN FRANCISCO, CA (July 3, 2009) -- Uncle Sam won’t be the only one Americans pay tribute to this Saturday, July, 4th at Yurcak Field in Piscataway, NJ. During this years’ red, white and blue holiday, as Sky Blue FC competes against the Boston Breakers, the team will commemorate the historic achievements of the 1999 U.S. Women’s National Team, which defeated China in penalty kicks to win the 1999 FIFA Women’s World Cup™.
Although the game is a celebration, Sky Blue FC will be looking for something to celebrate. Currently tied for last place in the WPS standings with FC Gold Pride, Sky Blue needs some offensive explosions this weekend in order to seal a win. Despite the numerous chances created in last weekend’s game against the Saint Louis Athletica, Sky Blue FC was unable to capitalize on all of them and left the pitch without any points.
According to Sky Blue FC head coach Kelly Lindsey, sparking some scoring opportunities and finishing will be major keys to victory against a red hot Boston team, which hasn’t lost a game since June 14th.
“Boston has some very talented and dangerous players, and they have the ability to attack from any position on the field. We need to play our game, and use our attack to stall their attack,” said Lindsey.
Julianne Sitch, who scored the lone Sky Blue FC goal in last week’s 2-1 loss to the Athletica, agrees with Lindsey that her team needs to produce fireworks on the field this weekend.
“[We need to] battle for a full 90 minutes and continue to create chances for each other. We do a good job of creating the chances and we need to put a few of those chances in the back of the net. I believe it’s going to come this weekend,” said Sitch
On optimistic outlook is good for Sky Blue FC, who needs to put some points on the board in the WPS standings in order to have a shot at the post season. Sitting on 12 points, they need at least two wins to match the Breakers 18 point second place position, and this weekend would be a good place to start.
“It’s very important to walk away with a win, it always is,” said Sitch. “With eight games left in the season we need to put ourselves in a good position to be in playoff position at the end of the season.”
While Sky Blue FC will focus on their attack, the Breakers will implement a different type of strategy. Defense will be at the core of the Breakers play this weekend.
“We need to play excellent defense, double-teaming and closing quickly as we did vs. Washington,” said Breakers head coach Tony DiCicco. “We have to keep better defensive shape than we did in New Jersey last time we played.”
Last time the Breakers rolled into Yurcak Field, a dominant Sky Blue FC offensive lit up the board and defeated the Boston squad 2-1 off of goals from Natasha Kai and Kacey White. For the Breakers, defense will be crucial to stopping explosive and dangerous stars like Kai and Collette McCallum.
“Sky Blue is a hard working team with a solid defense and dangerous strikers who like to run at the backline,” said DiCicco
DiCicco will look to players like Christine Latham in the midfield and goalkeeper Ali Lipsher, who has recorded two shutouts in her past three starts to put some brakes on the Sky Blue attack. Amy Rodriguez will play up top, after scoring her first WPS goal June 21st against the Chicago Red Stars, along with Kristine Lily, who has scored three goals this season - the most of any domestic player.
“Good teams usually have a number of players that can step up to lead the team and that is how I feel about our Breakers [this weekend],” said DiCicco.
Kickoff for this red, white and blue celebration game is scheduled for 4:00 pm ET, but head out before the game for some commemorative events. Starting at 3:20 ET both Sara Whalen and Saskia Webber, members of the 1999 USWNT, will be signing autographs for fans at the National Soccer Hall of Fame table located next to the main grandstand.
