CANBERRA, AUSTRALIA (Jan. 26, 2012) – Happy Australia Day everyone! As I sit in my wonderful host family’s living room watching the Australian Open (Come on Federer!) stuffing my face with pavlova, I started thinking about just how little of time I have left here. Five days. Five days to pack. Five days to say goodbye to all the great people I’ve met here. Five days to learn how to make pavlova (just kidding - kind of).
Five days to win a Championship.
Okay so the actual game is in two days; I’m leaving three for celebration - positive thinking right? But I actually can’t believe it's here. I knew when I first arrived in Canberra, I had come to a special team, but had no idea we would have this kind of season. Finishing a season undefeated is a first for me, and it has been amazing. Our team has had an extraordinary ability to stick together on the field, no matter the score or how we are playing and get it done. Or course it helps to have a goal scorer like Michelle Heyman on the team, but honestly it has been through everyone’s belief in each other during these close games that has gotten us through. The willingness of everyone on this team to work for everyone else is in my opinion what has set us apart from so many other teams I’ve played against - and what will keep us on top in the end.
I’m going to keep this short because I don’t want to talk about the final too much, but we have one more training before the game, and I promise we will all be ready. The support in Canberra has been unreal throughout our entire season, and we are expecting a sold-out crowd on Saturday. Thank you to all the fans here and that are following at home. You have all been a huge part of our success. So say a prayer, cross your fingers, and wish us luck, and hopefully at about 5 p.m. Canberra time we will have finished our perfect season!
Now on to other important things ... who wants to send me massive amounts of Australian marshmallows to America when I leave?
