Alyssa Naeher, Leslie Osborne and Tiffany Weimer are all contributors to Our Game Magazine, a new women's soccer specific publication.
Three Boston Breakers have recently become involved in an outside project to peak the knowledge and interest of women’s soccer around the world. Forward Tiffany Weimer, midfielder Leslie Osborne, and goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher are now staff members of “Our Game”, a new, monthly online magazine about women’s soccer.
Weimer, the magazine’s editor, said her agent originally came up with the idea and passed it along to her. “There’s not a lot of coverage of women’s soccer. We’re all obviously very passionate about it and we wanted to do something to change that,” she said. “We wanted to not only affect the U.S. but also the whole world, and just try to get people more interested.”
The magazine, which averages about forty pages, features an array of subjects. It includes interviews with players, coaches, and even WPS General Managers. For example, the first issue featured an interview with U.S. Women’s National Team Head Coach Pia Sundhage. There are also features on teams and leagues from all over the world, and even a Fitness Corner, which offers good advice those readers that are athletes themselves.
So far the staff, which is made up of both players and writers, has put out two issues. While soccer might be the main job of the athletes, those working on the magazine are putting some of their outside interests and areas of expertise to work. Weimer’s studies in journalism have made her fit to be the magazine’s editor, while Osborne’s experiences in modeling and fashion make her the perfect writer for the fashion section. Naeher, who studied kinesiology at Penn State, writes a health and wellness column.
“These two are experts in their sections and they were chosen for a reason,” Weimer said of her teammates’ participation.
As a PUMA-sponsored athlete who is also interested in starting her own clothing line, Osborne’s writing shows how fashion has become a big part of the soccer world, and how the image of the female athlete has changed over time. “I think for a long time female professional athletes have been viewed a certain way—husky and masculine. There was a vision of what a female athlete is, but if you look now there’s so many different female athletes that represent different cultures and styles,” she said.
For July’s issue, Osborne wrote a story called “Fashionably Fit” which discusses how to find the perfect cleat for you.
Naeher’s column for July featured an article about a fitted layer of clothing called SKINS, that an athlete can wear to help their body recover after a work out.
There are also plans in place to get more WPS players involved in the future. For instance, there’s a good chance you’ll see Manya Makoski from the Atlanta Beat contribute to the August issue.
The first issue attracted about 5,000 readers, and with each issue the team hopes to increase readership and eventually gain sponsors. So far, the trio is pleased with its initial success.
“We’re a start-up. We’ve had little things and we’ll have little things for a while, but for the first issue, I think it went really well,” said Weimer. “It exceeded expectations even for us.”
