Late Penalty Kick lifts Sky Blue over Breakers 2-1
Angeli Scores 1st Career Goal
Defender Jordan Angeli celebrates her first career goal with forward Lindsay Tarpley, who made her debut in Boston's 2-1 loss to New Jersey.

Cambridge, Mass. (June 13, 2010) – The Boston Breakers remain winless against Sky Blue FC as New Jersey defeated Boston 2-1 on Sunday, June 13 in Women’s Professional Soccer Action at Harvard Stadium in Cambridge, Mass. at 4 p.m.

Sky Blue FC midfielder Rosana put away a penalty kick after being taken down in the box in stoppage time to secure the win and earn three points on the road for New Jersey.

Boston dominated the first half of play, recording twelve shots to Sky Blue FC’s one. Fabiana, Kelly Smith, and Kristine Lilly all came dangerously close to putting Boston on the scoring sheet early.

“We obviously left some goals on the table in the first half,” said Boston Breakers head coach Tony DiCicco. “The game should have put away then.”

Defender Jordan Angeli got the Breakers on the board in the 14th minute, putting the ball past goalkeeper Karen Bardsley during a scramble in the box off a Kasey Moore corner kick.  The goal is the first of Angeli’s career.

Sky Blue came out aggressive in the second half, putting Boston on their heels.  Just seven minutes into the second half Tasha Kai dribbled toward the goal unattested, forcing goalkeeper Ashley Phillips to come out of the box.  Phillips slid and cleared the ball down the center of the field onto the feet of Heather O’Reilly who chipped a ball over Phillips from 35 yards out.

“Obviously this was my first goal of the season so I’m thrilled about getting on in the back of the net,” said O’Reilly. “It was even nicer that it was of that caliber and I was glad I could contribute to the win."

Despite outshooting Sky Blue 20-0, and 8-4 for shots on goal, Boston couldn’t find the back of the net again.  Bardsley, who leads the league in saves kept New Jersey in the game coming up with seven saves.

Sunday’s game debuted forward Lindsay Tarpley whom the Breakers recently signed after the dissolution of Saint Louis Athletica.  Tarpley had two shots in her 90 minutes of play.

“I’m really excited to be here,” said Tarpley. “I’ve always admired the way that Boston plays soccer so I’m excited to be a part of it and I’m looking forward to helping the team in whatever way I can.”

The win gives Sky Blue FC three points in the standings for 14 total, while Boston remains seven points behind New Jersey and sit in 6th place.

The Breakers have yet to record a home victory in 2010, and have not won since their season opener against Washington on April 10th.

The Breakers travel to Hayward, California to face FC Gold Pride on Saturday, June 19 at 10 p.m.  Bay Area defeated Boston 2-1, with both goals from Marta, on May 14 at Harvard Stadium.

Lindsay Tarpley, Boston Breakers Forward
On playing in Boston
I’m really excited to be here.  I’ve always admired the way that Boston plays soccer so I’m excited to be a part of it and I’m looking forward to helping the team in whatever way I can.  Regarding  the game today I thought there were moments we did excellent things.  I think it’s important to take those moments and continue to build from them.

On her header in the 75th minute
I think unfortunately I was a little bit offsides and I think the timing of my runs and just being here and training more training everyday I’m going to feel more comfortable and find the timing and that combinations with my teammates.

On Boston’s style of play
I think they’re a possession oriented team and they are building and I’m excited to be a part of that. They play great soccer and I’m looking forward to being out there and helping the team.

Kelly Smith, Boston Breakers Midfielder
On the tough loss
I think this is probably the best we’ve played since the start of the season.  It just didn’t happen for us tonight in front of the goal and something that obviously we’ve addressed.  We had a lot of chances whether they were inside the box or outside but we were definitely frustrated with the result tonight.

Tony DiCicco, Boston Breakers Head Coach
On the tale of two halves
We obviously left some goals on the table in the first half, game should have put awaythen and then we had a broken play that turned into a goal.  I’m proud of the players, they’re devastated.  They really they went after it this game and all I can say is if we play with this mentality we’ll get the wins.  We’re making some mistakes we have to correct and finishing chances that we have to finish.  That’s the whole story of this game.  Between the 18’s you can be really good and we did, but you have to do it at both ends of the field and we haven’t.  We’re missing passes in the penalty area – it’s the same thing you hear with the Celtics – make the extra pass.  You know with the first pass that Fabiana put across the face of the goal, Lindsay Tarpley was right there, if she passed it, Tarpley would have had it.  But as far as the effort and the intensity and how much they cared about this game I am very, very pleased.  We have to figure out ways to win instead of ways to lose.

On Lindsay Tarpley’s debut
Lindsey was good.  She was a lot of effort.  She was creating problems for them. She was close to scoring a couple of times.  I think she really helped us and we had a lot of good performances but it wasn’t a great result.

On the penalty call that earned Sky Blue FC the game winning goal
I couldn’t tell from my angle.  I couldn’t tell if it was in the penalty area or not. I don’t think it was a bad officiating game.  I thought it was a pretty well officiated game.  There were a couple decisions I thought were wrong but overall I thought it was okay.

Heather O’Reilly, Sky Blue FC Midfielder
On taking three points
I think both teams had some great chances. Boston maybe had a couple more good chances, but I’m proud of our team that we fought to the end.  If you agree or disagree with the penalty kick at the end, we at least got in the box and had the numbers and were looking for a finish in that 92nd minute.  There’s a lot to say about that.  I think we fought until the end for each other and that’s something we haven’t necessarily seen this season.  And we’re going to take these 3 points and move on and hopefully get a win next week as well.

On the Breakers controlling first 45 minutes
We figured some things out at half time.  I think that with the players that they have down the center of the park – Lauren Cheney, Lindsay Tarpley, Kelly Smith, they were getting a lot of combinations right down the middle of the park and our midfield decided that we really needed to tighten up the middle. Make it a little more condensed in there so they couldn’t have as free flowing play as they did in the first half.  I think that we did that and it opened a lot of things up. Fabiana on the flanks, we had to deal with that all game.  She was excellent tonight.  I’m proud of the way that we kind of kept our heads up at half time and worked out some problems together in the locker room and came out here and executed.

On having all the key Sky Blue FC players back on field for final 45’
It’s exciting. It’s exciting because when they were gone we really had a lot of other people step up and reserve players step in and make the most of their chance. It’s been really exciting to get all our pieces together.  It seems like one is healthy each week at a time.  Now we’re waiting for Carli Lloyd to be that last final piece of our puzzle.  It’s really exciting to be a complete team again but as I said it takes all 22 players and that’s what’s cool about our team. Everybody stepped up at different times of the season.

On her goal
I’m going to have to see it on the replay because I don’t really remember too clearly.  I remember Tasha Kai putting great pressure on the goalkeeper and that’s sort of what made the play start off and then Ashley Phillips was out of the box and the ball was pretty much bouncing straight towards me.  There was no spin on the ball, it was just very straight. It’s something you do at practice all the time, and it’s just about keeping good technique. Obviously this was my first goal of the season so I’m thrilled about getting on in the back of the net and it was even nicer that it was of that caliber and I was glad I could contribute to the win. I feel good about it.

On her team not giving up
I think that you’re never happy with a tie.  This team is never content with a tie. Our last couple of results have been two ties and a loss so we were hungry for a win tonight.   I’m proud of us, I’m proud that we weren’t content and that’s risky. It’s risky to send numbers forward. I think maybe if we didn’t get that penalty kick it would have been a transition down our throats down the other end but that’s just a chance you take if you want to be champions in this league.
