1) General Rules Regarding Team Rosters:
- The “Player Roster” shall consist of eighteen (18) full-time players and up to four (4) developmental players.
- The Player Roster is to be determined via the appropriate cut-down dates at the conclusion of each pre-season.
- On August 15 at 8pm ET/5pm PT, the eighteen (18) full-time players on the Player Roster become frozen and transactions involving these players are not allowed through the remainder of the season. Transactions involving developmental players are still allowed.
- The “Game Roster” shall consist of players from the Player Roster. The home team may place eighteen (18) players on its Game Roster, from which eleven (11) starters and three (3) substitutes can be selected. The visiting team may place sixteen (16) players on its Game Roster (regardless of how many players are in the travelling party), from which eleven (11) starters and three (3) substitutes can be selected.
2) Weekly Roster Requirements: Each week, teams must file a Player Roster with the League. The Player Roster must include the following information:
A) Player Status: Each player on the Player Roster must be assigned one of the following player status categories:
- Available (A): This identifies those players who are eligible and able to play in the upcoming game.
- Questionable (Q): This identifies those players who are questionable due to injury. Teams must also assign a probability to a player’s questionable status as follows: 75% (probable - P); 50% (questionable - Q); or 25% (unlikely - U).
- Unavailable (U): This identifies those players who are unavailable for the upcoming game. Teams must also identify a reason for a player’s unavailability as follows:
(1) Injured (I): Player is injured and is 100% unavailable for the upcoming game.
(2) Injured Reserve (IR): Player has experienced a major injury that is not a season-ending injury and has been placed on IR.
(3) Suspended (S): Player is not eligible to play in the upcoming game due to suspension by the team (e.g., violation of team rules) or the League (e.g., accumulation of yellow cards, red card ejection, disciplinary committee decision or Commissioner's decision).
(4) National Team Duty (NT): Player is not available to play in the upcoming game due to participation with her National Team.
(5) Other (O): Teams must include a description of why the player is unavailable.
B) Game Roster: Teams must indicate on the Player Roster which players are likely to be included on the Game Roster for the next game.
C) A weekly roster report is available for fans and media on womensprosoccer.com and is updated every Friday evening prior to weekend action and the evening before mid-week games.
3) Full-Time Players:
- Full-time players must be signed to a Standard Player Contract (SPC). Full-time players may be signed to a guaranteed or semi-guaranteed contract.
- On July 1 at 8pm ET/5pm PT, all full-time player contracts become guaranteed for the remainder of the season.
4) Developmental Players:
- A Team may opt to employ up to four (4) developmental players, one of which must be a goalkeeper.
- Developmental players are signed to a standard developmental player contract. Developmental player contracts are not guaranteed.
- Developmental players may be used during all games where the number of available full-time players falls below eighteen (18).
- If a developmental player plays in twelve (12) League games, the team must elevate the player to one of the eighteen (18) full-time positions and she must be offered a Standard Player Contract.
5) International Players: A WPS team may hold the rights to up to six (6) international players at any one time. A WPS team may not have more than five (5) international players on its Player Roster at any one time, except that for the 2010 season, a WPS team may add a sixth (6th) international player to its Player Roster if that 6th international player last played for the Saint Louis Athletica.
6) College Deferred Players: A college-deferred player is a collegiate player who is unable to participate in the majority of the previously scheduled team tryouts due to remaining obligations to her educational institution. The college player may be granted extended tryouts through June 1, 2010. By June 1, 2010 at 8:00pm ET, the player must either be offered a full-time or developmental contract.
7) Injured Players and Replacement Players
- If a full-time player experiences a season-ending injury, a team may declare her as such, and bring in a replacement player.
- If a full-time player experiences a major injury that is not a season-ending injury, a team may place her on the injured reserve (IR). Once placed on the IR, the injured player may not play in a League game for a minimum of thirty (30) days, During the time the injured player is on the IR, a replacement player may be used (provided this complies with all other roster rules).
- A replacement player may be a full time player, a developmental player or a short-term player and she may be a domestic or international player (provided this complies with all other rules regarding international players).
